The church was formed in 1841 by Dr. Hans Nielsen Hauge, a Norwegian pastor, writer and pietist revivalist who worked to bring Protestant Christianity back to Norway. He had been a student of American Baptist preacher Elias Smith. In 1841, Dr. Hauge purchased a chapel in Grunerløkka, Oslo and opened it for services.
