The exact date of its construction is unknown, but scholars believe Gol Stave Church was built sometime between 1150 and 1250. The building was first historically documented in 1324 and was used as a pilgrimage site until the early 16th century when Protestantism spread throughout Norway. By 1890 the building had fallen into disrepair and was in danger of collapsing. The Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments bought the property and in 1900, the church was towed from Gol to Oslo, Norway and completely restored to its original condition. Gol Stave Church is a unique example of Romanesque stone and woodwork. Its façade has been decorated with intricate carvings, some of which have been attributed to the legendary carpenter Søren Rolfsen, including the famous Octagram motif. The church, which measures 51 feet long, is constructed with vertical oak posts and has a four-stepped gable roof. Inside, the church features a large crucifix and a commemorative stone plaque in memory of the 19th century Norwegian military hero Colonel Christopher Hansteen, who died in a nearby battle in 1814.
