Established in 1736 AD, it is one of the oldest temples in the Kathmandu valley and one of the four major temples dedicated to four different goddesses. The temple was originally built as a mud and stone structure by King Prithvi Narayan Shah. It was later renovated and reconstructed in brick and mortar by King Bhupatindra Malla in 1767 AD. The worship method of Indreni Temple Bhutkhel is a combination of two traditional Nepalese rituals known as “paha” and “panchatna”. Paha is related to the worship of the gods while Panchatna is associated with the offering of food. In order to perform this ritual, the worshiper needs to stand in a place facing the shrine and offer up their prayers. During the prayer, sweets or fruits are placed in front of the shrine and incense is lit around it.
