The worship method of the Doleshwor Mahadeva Temple in Nepal varies according to Hindu beliefs and local customs. Generally, the temple is open throughout the year and devotees make offerings of flowers, fruits, coconut, incense, lamps, and mantras to the presiding deity. During large festivals, special pujas and homas are conducted to invoke the gods. The devotees have to circumambulate the temple three times, recite the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, and pray to the deity. Special pujas are also performed to Lord Mahadev on the new moon day and on Mondays. Devotees offer coconuts, camphor and sandalwood to the deity. Havanas or yagnas are also performed to invoke the gods. Prasadam offerings are made to distribute among devotees as a form of blessing from the deity. On Shivaratri, the festival of Lord Mahadev, devotees come in large numbers to pay their respects and seek his blessings.
