United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) In Namibia: History,Facts, & Services

The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) is a Reformed Protestant denomination within the Congregational grouping of united and uniting churches. It was formed in April 2000 through the uniting of the Congregational Union of South Africa (organized in 1859) and the Reformed Churches of South Africa (organized in 1824). The UCCSA is the largest Afrikaans-speaking congregational denomination in South Africa, with congregations in most of the major cities of the country. Its membership is estimated to be more than 60,000. The UCCSA owes its history to a series of churches and church movements rooted in the Reformation of the 16th century that sought to bring the direct experience of God’s grace by faith in Jesus Christ, recognizing the Bible as God’s authoritative rule in all matters of faith and organizing congregations around the biblical principle of local church autonomy under the Lordship of Jesus. The local UCCSA congregations are autonomous but united at the central level through an elected General Synod. The local congregations include members of many different national and racial backgrounds, presenting the UCCSA with the challenging task of fostering an authentically African and multi-cultural identity that is united in the essentials of the Christian faith as found in the Scriptures. As a united church, the UCCSA is committed to a Belhar Confession-based approach to both social justice and ecumenism. The UCCSA mission includes both a focus on outreach, evangelism and discipleship, and the task of proclaiming a biblically faithful witness in a modern and changing world. As part of the latter, it publishes various faith-related resources, including both English and Afrikaans language editions of the Bible. The UCCSA also provides services such as crisis counseling and reconciliation ministries.
