The church was originally established to provide spiritual guidance for the local population and to provide support for the surrounding communities. The church originated in 1903 when Reverend JD Kloppers arrived in Swakopmund from Cape Town to take up the role of minister at the then newly established Congregational Church. His goal was to develop a place of worship for the local community as well as provide a safe place for the area’s vulnerable members. The church accommodated some of the local population for worship and soon served multiple congregations who wished to worship in their own language. The church also provided educational and health initiatives for the local population, such as medical clinics and libraries, as well as holding weekly Bible studies. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Namibia.
