NG Moedergemeente / Windhoek Congregation In Namibia: History,Facts, & Services

NG Moedergemeente (Nederduitsch / Dutch Reformed Mother Congregation) or Windhoek Congregation is the oldest congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. Founded in 1838 and established in 1845, it is the original parent congregation for all Dutch Reformed churches in the region. The congregation serves more than eighty churches located in Windhoek and other cities in Namibia. The history of the Windhoek Congregation began in 1838, when a missionary from the Rhenish Missionary Organisation was sent to Namibia (then South West Africa). He was instructed to establish a church and minister to the local people. The church, initially named the Rhenish congregation, was the first spiritual home for many Dutch-speaking immigrants in the region. In 1845, the Rhenish congregation was renamed the Dutch Reformed Church in the South African Republic. Then in 1871, a new building was built and the congregation was renamed the NG Moedergemeente (Nederduitse Gereformeerde Moedergemeente). Today, it is still the oldest congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa and its name is translated as the Dutch Reformed Mother Congregation. The Windhoek Congregation provides a range of services, such as worship services, baptisms, weddings, funerals, bible studies, regular church activities, and a variety of other community services. Other services include church building upkeep, worship music, and counseling services. The congregation also serves as a hub for the local Dutch Reformed churches, providing support and guidance for its member churches. Today, the congregation continues to serve its members, providing spiritual guidance and leadership for generations to come.
