The Kanipakam Vinayaka temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the popular Hindu god of wisdom. Devotees offer prayers and perform rituals which include pooja (worship) in the temple. The traditional worship method followed in the temple is often referred to as ‘Vinayaka Pooja’. The ritual involves offering flowers, fruits, coconuts and other items as prasad (sacred offerings) to the deity. Before the start of the pooja, devotees perform ‘Abhishekam’, which involves bathing the deity with water, milk, honey and other liquids. After this, a specific Yagnavalkaya (Invocation) is performed in front of the deity in which flowers, ghee and traditional offerings like sandalwood paste, vermillion, turmeric are offered. Then, mantras are chanted, and hymns are sung. This is followed by Pranayama and Prarthana (worship). The devotees then apply the ‘special vermillion’ to the idol of the deity. After this, the aarti (lamp offering) is done. Post this, the devotees can have darshan of the deity and can also offer special prayers.
