& Facts: Gurudwara Shri Shaheedan Sahib is a historical Sikh gurudwara located in the Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab, India. The gurudwara is dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Sikhism and also in remembrance of the martyrdom of their Guru, Guru Gobind Singh ji. The meaning of ‘Shaheedan’ in Gurmukhi means ‘martyr.’ Constructed in the late 17th century, the gurudwara is a prime place for pilgrimage for disciples of Sikhism. Inside the main sanctum, there is an open courtyard known as ‘Langar hall’ where the devotees partake in the langar (free food offered to all by the gurdwara regardless of their caste, creed or religion). Opposite the Langar hall is ‘Tat Khalsa’ where the faith’s holy insignia are housed and sangat (congregation) is held. There is also a diwan hall in the complex where special prayers are held dedicated to the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh ji. The worship method of Gurudwara Shri Shaheedan Sahib in Fatehgarh Sahib is similar to that of other Sikh gurudwaras. The worshippers begin by paying respect to the Guru Granth Sahib and offering a donation as a sign of respect. They then offer their prayers, sing kirtans, and listen to discourses by the granthi. Non-vegetarian food should not be consumed in the vicinity of the gurudwara and alcohol is prohibited.
