Akamasoa is a community in the south of Madagascar, founded by Father Pedro Opeka in 1989. The community is home to more than 25,000 people who live in poverty and struggle to access basic health, education, and sanitation services. Father Pedro Opeka, using recycled materials, built the first house for a family and thus begins the fight against extreme poverty and abandonment in the region. Father Pedro Opeka traveled to Madagascar in 1965. He was inspired to help the people living in extreme poverty conditions in the south. In 1989, Father Pedro Opeka began the building of the first house. This started a movement to build simple homes for the people in need and promote solidarity among the population. The project evolved and began to expand. Today, Akamasoa is home to more than 25,000 people and is a model of sustainability, promoting economic and social change in the region.
