St. Gregory the Illuminator Church is an Armenian Apostolic Church located in the capital city of Riga, Latvia. The church was built in 1880 for the Armenian Apostolic community of the city. It was consecrated by Gregorian Catholicos Kevork I of the Holy See of Etchmiadzin in 1883 and it is named after St. Gregory the Illuminator, the patron saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The church is part of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Estonia and Latvia. It is one of the best churches in Latvia which you must visit.

History:

The original church was built in the 13th century as part of Echmiadzin's Cathedral. During the period of Soviet rule, the church's rights to operate were revoked and the church was demolished. In 1980, the Armenian Apostolic community in Riga was reinstated by Decree of the Soviet Government and the church was rebuilt and reconsecrated. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Latvia.
