Orthodox church In Latvia is the largest denomination of Christianity in the country. It has approximately 545,000 members who form about 17% of the population. The history of the Orthodox church in Latvia goes back to the mid-15th century when the first Orthodox churches were established in the region. The building of Orthodox churches increased during the 16th and 17th centuries and by the 18th century, there were some 50 Orthodox churches in what is now Latvia. During the 19th century, the Orthodox church was silenced by the Tsarist regime in Latvia and many churches were destroyed or closed. In the early 20th century, Russian Orthodoxy underwent a revival in Latvia and the number of Orthodox believers increased. Since then, however, Latvia underwent Soviet rule and this resulted in a decline in numbers – by 1920, the Baltic Orthodox community had dropped from 600,000 people in 1941 to less than 200,000 in 1991. Today, Orthodox churches provide a variety of services, including worship services, sacraments, and pastoral counseling. They also offer youth and adult education classes, and many parishes have charitable outreach programs that serve the elderly and those in need. Additionally, some churches have libraries and museums, and some have clubs whose members perform charitable works.
