Kerak Castle In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services
History:
Kerak Castle was originally built in 1115 by Pagan the Butler, the ruler of Oultrejordain. Pagan had received the area of Transjordan as a part of his domain from Baldwin I of Jerusalem. After Pagan’s death, the castle passed to his son, Reynald of Kerak who greatly enlarged the castle and made it an important stronghold of the Crusaders in Transjordan. Reynald was defeated in 1187 at the Battle of Hattin and the castle passed to Saladin. In 1189, the castle was retaken by the Crusaders when King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem captured it. The castle then served as a Crusader stronghold until it was conquered by the Mamluks in 1263. Kerak Castle This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

The castle is located about 100 miles south of Amman and covers an area of approximately 11 acres. It was built in the shape of an irregular pentagon and composed of a judicious mix of natural and artificial elements. The castle has an impressive keep, towers, a moat, walls and protective enclosures. It has been featured in a number of films including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Kerak Castle
