History:
The Fortress of Machaerus, located in the Jordanian desert, was built by Herod the Great in the 1st century BC as a defense against the Nabataeans. According to Josephus, the fortress was the prison for John the Baptist and later became a palace for Herod’s family. After Herod’s death in 4 BC, the fortress was taken over by the Jewish Zealots and later by the Roman Empire. Fortress of Machaerus This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.
