Its original name was Cathedral of La Preciosa Sangré de Cristo. It was renamed “St. Jago de la Vega” in honor of Santiago de la Vega, who was Jamaica’s first governor in Spanish colonial times. The cathedral is renowned for its historic architecture, ornate interior and connections to the island’s earliest settlers and colonists.
