History:

The Rybinsk Museum-Preserve is a historical, scientific and cultural complex located in the city of Rybinsk, Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia. The historical background of the Museum-Preserve dates back to 1777, when the merchant Filimon Lukich Sagdeyev opened the very first museum in the area. The first museum included public collections of artifacts from the Russian Empire, including works of local art, archaeological finds, coins, and books. In 1881, the museum was housed in a new building, and collections of ethnography, geography, natural history, and local history began to grow. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Rybinsk Museum-Preserve had acquired a wide variety of items from all over Russia, including items from pre- and post-Revolutionary periods. In 1990, the museum received official status as a state-run historical-cultural and natural preserve.
