The Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah is a sprawling and richly decorated Fatimid-era mosque located in the heart of Cairo, Egypt. The mosque is considered to be one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. The Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah was commissioned in 990 by the Fatimid caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah and was constructed between 990 and 1012 and became Cairo's main mosque during the Fatimid period. The mosque was built as a stately monument to reflect Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah's power and influence. The fascinating structure is made up of various parts and levels, each with different design features. The complex consists of a large courtyard, four minarets, the main sanctuary of the mosque surrounded by aisles, and a long arcade with many arches on both sides and a tall dome at its center. The interior features intricate stucco and woodwork, with gilded marble decorations, wooden mashrabiyas, and marble columns and capitals dating back from the original 11th century construction. The courtyard of the mosque is the largest open-air courtyard in the world, measuring at 63,000 square feet and lined with 220 columns. A massive, bulbous dome stands at the center of the courtyard and four minarets stand at the corners. The main prayer hall stands around the courtyard and is adorned with semi-circular arches, marble flooring, and intricate plasterwork. The main sanctuary is encircled by a set of aisles and columns, as well as four gates which lead to the interior of the courtyard. The mosque also features a royal mausoleum, a library, and a school of Qur'anic sciences. The Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah is considered a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and a key symbol of Cairo. It is a powerful representation of the Fatimid period and a testament to the power of the Fatimids as well as to Cairo's ancient and vibrant history.
