Clontarf & Scots Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland located in the Dublin suburb of Clontarf. It is believed to have been founded in 1745, making it the oldest Presbyterian congregation in the Dublin area. Clontarf & Scots Presbyterian Church History Clontarf & Scots Presbyterian Church began as a branch of the Scottish missionary movement, with a view to spreading the right-hand of fellowship to Irish immigrants living in Belfast and Dublin. Initially, services were held in a rented house in Middle Abbey Street, Dublin. In 1747, the congregation moved to the city centre so that it could reach a larger audience. The church was known as the Scots African Presbyterian Clothing Church. Its founding pastor was the Rev. William M'Claire. At the turn of the 19th century, complex societal issues began to threaten its existence. A split in the Presbyterian Church of Ireland occurred in 1843 and a subsequent move of the congregation forced the congregation to move to North King Street. In 1849, Clontarf & Scots Presbyterian Church moved to its present location in Clontarf; a stone church was built on the site in 1853. The church underwent several renovations in the years that followed and continues to be a vibrant and growing congregation today.
