The site of the Church of St John The Evangelist dates back to at least 1086 when it was mentioned in Domesday Book. It became the parish church for Clapham in 1290. The church suffered extensive damage during a great fire in 1666 and was rebuilt by 1668. The church underwent further renovations and additions over the following centuries. In 1887, a nationally acclaimed series of religious lectures were held in the church and it became a major pilgrimage site.
