Bab al-Futuh in Cairo In Egypt: History,Facts, & Services

Bab al-Futuh is one of the main historical gates in Cairo, Egypt, located at the end of the street of Bab al-Futuh in the northern part of the old city. It was originally built during the Fatimid era in 1087 on the orders of General Jawhar As-Siqilli. It was reconstructed under the rule of Salah ad-Din in 1179, which is why it is sometimes referred to as Bab al-Nasr (Gate of Victory). It has been restored several times over the centuries and still stands today as a major tourist attraction in Cairo. Bab al-Futuh is one of the three main gates of medieval Cairo, along with Bab Zuwayla and Bab al-Nasr. The gate is decorated with intricate patterns and inscriptions in the Mamluk style and is similar to the style seen at the Citadel. It is also the primary entry point for visitors to the Northern Cemetery. Inside the gate, visitors can find a number of monuments, including the Mamluk tombs of Sultan al-Ashraf Sayf ad-Din Qaymaz, Sultan Qaitbay, and others. The gate also houses Souk al-Fustat, a market selling second-hand items, souvenirs and traditional Egyptian artefacts.
