Brief History:

Al-Askari Mosque (Arabic: الأسكري الحرام‎ or Masjid al-Askari) is a Shia Muslim holy site in the Iraqi city of Karbala, located beside the Al-Husayn Mosque and the grave of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, who is of revered significance in Shia Islam. It is one of the most important mosques in the world for Shia Muslims, and is located approximately 100 km south-west of Baghdad. Architecture:

The Al-Askari Mosque is one of the holiest Shi’a shrines in the city of Karbala, Iraq. The mosque was built in the year 944 for two of the twelve Imams: Hasan ibn Ali and Husayn ibn Ali. It is a simple building made up of two levels, one with three high domes and the other with two low ones, all of which are built of brick and crowned with elegant white marble finials. The main façade is composed of a set of double arches with carved stucco decorations. The eastern façade is more modest and mainly covered in marble tiles.
