Overview:

Virupakshi Cuha and Skandashram, situated on the banks of river Cauvery, is considered one of the four famous shrines of Lord Muruga (Karthikeya) in Tamil Nadu and is at a distance of 70 Kms from Thanjavur. This temple has been praised in Sangam literature and is of great antiquity. The deity in the temple is believed to have been worshipped by Lord Agastya, Lord Rama and Indiran. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.

History:

The temple is located on a hill known as Vajra Kshetram, an ancient sacred joint, which is located on the banks of river Cauvery and it is full of lush green foliage, making it a marvelous sight to behold. There are two categories of shrines in this temple as Virupakshi Cuhas and Skandashram. Virupakshi Cuhas: This temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga and is one of the grandest temples in South India for Lord Muruga. In the vicinity of this temple are many smaller sub-shrines that are dedicated to various other deities like Lord Siva, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati and other Lords. There is a giant chariot made of granite with a union of three deities – Virupakshi (Lord Shiva), Parvati (Goddess Parvati) and Skandaswami (Lord Muruga). Skandasram: It is the definite site of Skandashram, where Lord Muruga specially appeared two times as per Sri Kanda Puranam. The temple is situated on the banks of Cauvery. Lord Skanda worshipped his father Lord Shiva at this sacred spot. There are 848 big and small sub-shrines inside the temple complex. Within the temple complex, there are nine tanks of divine power which are popularly known as Navakuyils and the temple has 6 Vimanas.
