. Rose Cathedral, also known as Santa Rosa de Copán, is a Catholic cathedral located in Copán, Honduras. Originally built in 1842 as the Church of Santa Rosa, it was consecrated as a Cathedral in 1887. It is considered the most significant architectural monument of Honduras due to the impressive neoclassical design of its interior and exterior. It was declared a historical monument in 1980 because of its great historical and artistic value. St. Rose Cathedral History St. Rose Cathedral was built between 1840 and 1842 with the help of Ignacio Zepada, a mercedarian friar from Spain, and was consecrated in 1843. It underwent major restorations and expansions in the 1950s and 1960s that saw the construction of the grand processional stairs and the transformation of its interior into a neoclassical style. St. Rose Cathedral Facts • The facade of the church features two bell towers with six bells, the signs of the cross, and a shield showing the arms of the diocese, all made of wood and painted in lime mixed with egg whites. • The building has three naves, eight windows, and two doors, one on each side of the main altar. • In the building’s left corner is the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament with a small altar.
