St. Vitus Kirche Erbsen In Germany: History,Facts, & Services

St. Vitus Kirche Erbsen is a Gothic-style church in Erbsen, Germany. It was constructed in 1320 and is one of the oldest churches in Schleswig-Holstein. The church remains intact and is a significant example of medieval European architecture. It is a popular tourist destination and has been designated a protected monument. The church is named after Saint Vitus, a 4th-century Roman Christian martyr. The church is composed of a transept, a nave, an apse, and a porch. It has a nave that is 13 meters in length and 5.5 meters in width and its central aisle is 3.2 meters wide. It is framed by massive buttress towers and two chapel buildings. The interior features a unique double triforium gallery. This supports the strength of the church structure and provides additional 'aisles' up to the roof. It features a unique system of vertebral columns that are grouped around the walls in sets of nine and staggered from one side of the church to the other. It has a high choir on the front side in the east and the entrance has two portals with towers. The walls are made of two-meter thick stones until the end of the aisle. The current interior design dates back to the 19th century when the church was renovated and converted into a neo-gothic style. The current neo-gothic design includes a rood screen and an oak altar table, both of which are typical of northern Germany. It also features a wooden roof and a decorative ceiling with floral patterns. St. Vitus Kirche Erbsen offers services in both the Protestant and Catholic traditions. Special religious events such as weddings, baptisms and funerals are held at the church. It is open to visitors on Sundays and is located in the center of town.
