It is a Gothic building constructed in the late 17th century and is considered a prime example of Baroque architecture in the area. The original Romanesque church was destroyed during a fire in 1645 and the present building was built in its place. It is one of the best churches in Germany which you must visit.

The original St. Mary's Church dates back to 1067 and it is believed to be the oldest surviving church in Thuringia. The church was part of a Benedictine monastery, which was dissolved during the Reformation in 1525. After that, the church became the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg. The church underwent many renovations over the years and in 1645 it was destroyed by a fire. The present building was constructed in its place. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Germany.
