The first recorded pastor of the church is Erlendr, who was in place in 1135. Throughout its history, the church has been involved in various events, including a memorial sermon in 1624 for the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe which was attended by King Christian IV. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Denmark.
