The complex of Santa Croce alla Lungara was most likely founded in 1306 by the Benedictine order. It was the site of a major battle between the Colonna and Crescenzi families in the late 14th century, during which much of the complex was destroyed. The site was eventually rebuilt in the 15th century, with the contemporary palace, bell tower, and chapel being added. Santa Croce alla Lungara was used as a papal residence during the 16th century, and also housed a printing press owned by the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. The complex became a prison from the late 17th century until 1873, when it was converted into a hospital. In the 1990s, it was transformed into a research and cultural center. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.
