Built in 1610, San Miguel Chapel is considered the oldest standing church in the continental United States. Originally part of the San Miguel Mission, the chapel was the only standing piece of the mission when it was abandoned in 1638. Ownership of the chapel changed hands multiple times over the centuries, its exterior and interior both seeing significant renovations over time. In 2005, it became a parish church, separate from its former parish, San Miguel Mission. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in USA.
