The museum opened its doors to the public on August 27, 1969, with the aim of informing the public about the history of toys. The museum holds some 30,000 objects in its permanent collection, as well as special exhibitions. The museum's collection includes a wide variety of toys and models from around the world, from the Renaissance to modern times. The museum began when the manager of the local Spielzeugmuseum toy factory, Jean Jacob and his wife Gertrud, gathered a collection of toys in 1950s. With the support of local businesses and the City of Nuremberg, the museum was established in the former office of a local brewery. At first, the museum displayed only toys that had been produced in the city of Nuremberg. However, over the years, it has grown to include a wide selection of toys from all over the world. The museum's permanent collections include dolls, figurines, tin soldiers, trains, boats, games, puzzles, construction kits, as well as various other toys. One of the most famous aspects of the museum is its annual International Toy Fair, which takes place every February.
