Michaeliskirche is an Evangelical Lutheran Church located in Hamburg, Germany. It was built in the early 14th century, replacing an earlier church destroyed in a city fire in 1284. The Michaeliskirche was later renovated in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is one of the most important churches in the city, with the Reformation service held here in 1529. Michaeliskirche History The Michaeliskirche is named after the Archangel Michael, and it is thought that the first version of the church was founded in 1130. This was before the city fire in 1284 that destroyed much of Hamburg. Following the fire, the original church was rebuilt and renovations of the Michaeliskirche were made in the 15th and 16th centuries. During the Reformation, reformer Martin Luther preached his last sermon at this church in 1540. Michaeliskirche Facts The Michaeliskirche is the third largest church in Hamburg, behind the Hauptkirche and the St. Jacobi Church. It was built between 1284 and 1310 in the Gothic style, and it stands 90 metres tall. The main facade is adorned with a richly sculpted portal. Inside, the church is known for its intricate medieval interior, featuring several ornate stained-glass windows and a Renaissance sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Michaeliskirche Services The Michaeliskirche hosts a variety of services, such as weekly holy communion, weekly vespers, and Sunday worship.
