Langelandsfort is located on Langeland, an island in Southern Denmark. The fort was built in the 1920s and is one of the largest fortresses in the country. The construction of Langelandsfort began in 1923, with the main purpose of providing Denmark with a defense against possible invasion from the sea. The fort was built on a 16- hectare island, which had been purchased from a local family in 1920. The fort was initially designed to house two 10.5 cm guns and four 2 cm machine guns. In 1927 and 1938, two additional batteries were built; one with 8 cm guns, and the other with 15 cm guns. The fort was also protected by several machine guns and anti-aircraft guns. By the outbreak of World War II, the fort was equipped with four casemate guns, four 7.5 cm anti-aircraft guns, three 5 cm anti-aircraft guns, two machine guns, and two 3 cm guns. The fort also featured a spacious garrison and a hospital. During the German occupation of Denmark, the fort was used as a military prison and was the scene of several executions. In 1945, Langelandsfort was liberated during the long siege of Copenhagen. The fort remained in use during the Cold War. In 1984, it was converted into a museum.
