History:

Jægerspris Castle is a Danish castle located in Jægerspris, on the northern shore of the Isefjord. The castle has a long and storied history, reaching back to 1265, where it was first established as a manor house for the de Ayllers family. During the 15th century, the castle became the home of King Hans I, who refurbished it and made numerous additions, such as a fortified keep and a chapel. He also designed the large parkland outside the castle's walls. The castle changed hands numerous times throughout the next few centuries. In the 16th century, it was sold to the Rosenkranz family, who held it until 1643. They were succeeded by the von der Linden family, who seemed to have held it until 1846, when Prince Frederick Charles of Hessen purchased the castle and turned it into a luxurious residence. Frederick Charles embarked on a huge wave of renovations, completely transforming the castle, and expanding it to include new wings, gardens and terraces. In the late 19th century, Jægerspris Castle became the residence of King Christian IX and his consort, Queen Louise. The royals held many grand balls and events there, and royal famines such as the British and Prussian royals were invited for stays at the castle. In 1947, King Christian X bequeathed the castle to the public, and it is now owned and operated by the Danish government. Since then, it has served as an arts and cultural center, and hosts numerous events such as concerts, weddings and other special occasions.
