The church is part of the Diocese of Chelmsford and is under the archdeaconry of Southend. The church dates back to the 12th century and stands on a hill at the northern end of the village. It is a Grade II listed building that is built in the Early English style of the 13th century with a Perpendicular tower added in the 15th century. The church is best known for its medieval wall paintings, which depict stories from the Bible. The church also contains a number of monuments and memorials, including one to Richard de Saint-Martin, steward to King John in the 13th century. The church also hosts a number of services and events each week, including Sunday morning services, midweek services, regular social events, and community activities.
