History:

Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin is one of the city's most iconic squares. Located in the heart of the German capital, the square is home to the Konzerthaus and the French and German Cathedrals, both of which have played a part in the city's history since the 18th century. The square was first created in the late 17th century, when the French Huguenot architect, Jean Dupetit, laid out the original plan. This included the layout of roads and pathways, including those that connected the square to the neighbouring Tiergarten park. A new fountain was also added to the square and the surrounding streets were named after military officers who had served in the Prussian army. For the next two centuries, Gendarmenmarkt underwent a number of transformations, with the additions of new buildings and decorations. In 1816, the Konzerthaus was erected in the square and by the early 1900s, it had become one of Berlin's busiest squares. During World War II, much of the square and its buildings were damaged but a major restoration of the square was completed in 1987.
