First Baptist Church Atlanta was founded in 1848 by Rev. Sharpe James who pastored this congregation until his death, in 1859. In the broadest sense, it was a African American church. During Reconstruction, the church relocated and in 1886, the congregation built a new building on the corner of Pryor and McDaniel streets in downtown Atlanta. The current building, a landmark structure known as the “Old Rock Church”, was constructed in 1891 and has served as the church's home since 1888. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in USA.
