Discover - Santi Protomartiri Romani - Fact, History and Travel Information
Santi Protomartiri Romani is the collective name given to the seven martyrs who died as Christian witnesses in Rome during the Roman persecution of Christians in the first century. They are recognized as the earliest Christian martyrs of the Roman Empire. The seven saints include St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Lawrence, St. Stephen, St. Marcellus, St. Cosmas, and St. Damian. The martyrs were buried in seven different churches in Rome, which later became known as the tituli, and are celebrated in Roman Catholic churches on June 29. The story of their martyrdom is recounted in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox liturgies, and their lives have become an important part of Christian history.
