Church of Sant'Anna dei Palafrenieri is a 17th century Roman Catholic church located in Rome, Italy. It is also known as the church of the Holy Stables, as it was built to accommodate the mounted soldiery, or "palafrenieri", of the Vatican. The Palafrenieri were responsible for the protection of the Pope and the maintenance of his equine transport requirements. It is one of the best churches in Rome which you must visit.

History:

The Palafrenieri first took up their post in the nearby palace of the Costaguti in 1634. They moved to their new church on 12 December 1670. The building was designed by Carlo Fontana and Giovanni Battista Soria and constructed between 1670 and 1678. The church is the centre of an important cultural and religious centre. Here, ceremonies were operated to mark the appointment of a new Pope, taking the oath of the Guards, and baptisms, marriages and funerals of members of the Guard. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.

The church is rectangular in shape, with a portico entrance. The façade is very grand, with two bell towers and a domed cupola. The interior features a Greek cross plan, with a large cupola overhead. It is furnished with a marble altar, seven side chapels, walls adorned with inlaid marble and ceiling fixtures.
