The Basilica of Saint Mary of Minerva, also known as Santa Maria sopra Minerva, is a Roman Catholic church in Rome, Italy built in the 13th century over earlier temples. It is known as the only gothic church in Rome and houses the tombs of several artist, including that of the great Michelangelo Buonarroti. History records that a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva stood on the site since the 5th century AD. Long a stopping point in Rome for papal processions the church was rebuilt in the 1250s by Pope Alexander IV and given the name Saint Mary of Minerva. The façade is designed in a Roman gothic style and is characterized by a contrast between its brightly colored patterned marble inlaid details with the deep hues of the marble structure. This combined with its imposing entrance and monumental size adds to its character and importance as one of Rome's important churches. Inside, visitors can view the many artworks that adorn its walls and ceilings, including the presentment of Mary in the center of the nave. The art and architecture are representative of the area's impressive history. Services held within the church are standard Roman Catholic Masses and special masses held for certain celebrations.
