History:

The original church originated in the 4th century, described in the annals of the chronicler Eutropius as the Titulus Lucinae and believed to have been founded by Pope Symmachus (498-514). In 1598, Pope Clement VIII tasked the architect Orazio Torriani with overseeing major renovation works of the church and transforming it into Baroque style. The original design by Torriani was modified in the late 17th century, giving the Basilica its current façade. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.
