History:

Anıtkabir (literally meaning "memorial tomb") is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence and the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. Located in Ankara, Anıtkabir covers a total area of around 78,000 square metres and includes a park of almost 110,000 square metres. It stands at a height of around 40 metres above the plain on an imposing verdant hill. The first work of the site began in 1944, shortly after Atatürk's death. The actual construction of Anıtkabir started in 1944, based on the design of the architect Professor Emin Onat. The construction work continued until October 1953. The monument of Anıtkabir is made up of various structures, the most important of which is the Atatürk Museum. This museum has five halls, each of which records Atatürk's life, works and achievements, and is constructed around the ceremonial Atatürk's Tomb. Other structures in the complex include the Honour Courtyard, historical exhibits room, tomb of Ismet Inonu, Independence Tower, Monumental Marble Courtyard, among others.
