History:

Al-Azhar Mosque was established in 970 CE by the Fatimid caliphate in Cairo, Egypt. During the Mamluk sultanate, Al-Azhar grew in power and influence, becoming an important part of the sultan’s government. Later, in the Ottoman period, the mosque was further expanded and its influential religious scholars were appointed as advisors to the Ottoman sultan, who focused much of his efforts in expanding the mosque.
