Narga Selassie In Ethiopia: History,Facts, & Services
History:
, Narga Selassie is a historical figure in Ethiopia who is believed to have led an expedition to the Kingdom of Lanfang in China during the rule of Emperor Fasilidas of Ethiopia. According to oral history, Narga Selassie gathered an army of several hundred mercenaries from what is now Eritrea, Somaliland, and Sudan and made his way eastward to visit the Central Chinese court. Although evidence of this expedition is scant and disputed by some, it is believed that Narga Selassie, his brother, and his four sons stayed in China for seven years. During this time, they made a favorable impression on the emperor, who appreciated their superior military technology, lion-hunting skills, and knowledge of Arabic literature and scripture. Narga Selassie and his company also had diplomatic relations with Portugal, according to Portuguese accounts. In 1632, Narga Selassie and his family returned to Ethiopia and were warmly welcomed by the Ethiopian Emperor Fasilidas.
