History:
is one of the oldest religious event in Ethiopia which is an annual gathering of thousands of people, from different parts of the country, in the National Holy Place of St. Mary of Zion Church at Axum on the 19th day of the Ethiopian Calendar, usually corresponding to the month of September. This tradition and colorful festival lasts for five days and nights. This event also marks the day of victory in the Battle of Adwa. During this celebration, pilgrims from different parts of Ethiopia visit St. Mary of Zion Church to honor and commemorate their ancestors and religious leaders who have been the guardians of Ethiopia’s Christian faith. Large tents are set up around the Church for the pilgrims to stay in and feed the poor. Pilgrims carry a stick made of incense, myrrh, and exotic spices, and burn it at St. Mary of Zion Church as a sign of righteousness. The vibrant and joyful mood of the visitors can be felt from a distance. Music, drumming, and dancing fill the air along with hymns of praise and adoration of the Holy Virgin Mary.
