History:

The Apostolic Church of Ethiopia-Gerji is a Christian Orthodox church that originated in the mid-19th century in the Oromo province of Ethiopia. The church was started by an evangelical bishop named Gerji Zimta who was a member of the Zay people. Gerji Zimta was a lay evangelist and a former king of his people (Zimta). He was converted to Christianity in 1822 and his conversion marked the beginning of the Gerji faith. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1843 and he set about spreading the Christian faith among the Oromo peoples of the northern Oromia province. The Gerji faith has since spread to other parts of Ethiopia and is one of the largest Christian denominations in the country.
