St. Marry Orthodox Church Adi Quita in Eritrea is a historic, religious site set on top of a hill above the Red Sea in the small town of Adi Quita. History The church has been a sacred site for Orthodox Christians since its construction began in 1910. St. Marry Catholic Church was erected in honor of St. Mary and was completed in 1915 during the Italian occupation of Eritrea. During this period, the church was officiated by the Italian Vicariate in Acqua. In 1975, an icon of St. Marry was painted on an altar prepared inside the church, an event that has since come to serve as an important date in the history and development of the Eritean Orthodox Church. Following the Independence of Eritrea in 1993, the Marry Orthodox Church was restored and subsequently recognized as a National Historic Site by the government. In 1994, the Church of St. Marry Adi Quita officially became the first parish within the re-established Eritrean Orthodox Church. Facts The Church of St. Marry Adi Quita is a two storey building with a cross-shaped floor plan. The interior is decorated with paintings and wall hangings from the Italian period. The Church is the site of the annual pilgrimage which takes place every year during the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox observance of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. During the pilgrimage, Orthodox believers can expect to find a day of worship, relaxation, and reflection as they venerate the ancient icon and listen to sacred readings. Services The Church provides religious services for local residents, including liturgies, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. A Sunday school is also held at the church, and a bookstore provides literature, books, and other religious materials. In addition, the Church hosts concerts and other cultural events within its grounds for the benefit of the parish community and visitors.
