The church is headed by Catholicos Patriarch Abune Filipos, who is the spiritual leader. The formation of Abune Ewostatawos Church in 848 AD was sparked by the social, political and religious situation in Ethiopia at that time. With the reform of Christianity during the 19th century, the church welcomed the teachings of Emperor Yohannes IV of Ethiopia adopting them as the official theology of the church. The church has been a force for unity, community and peace for the people of Eritrea, providing both spiritual and practical help for those in need. During Ethiopia’s civil war, the church provided badly-needed aid to refugees and those affected by the conflict.
