The origins of Westminster Abbey as a church can be traced back to the 7th century, when a Benedictine monk, saint Benedict of Nursia, wrote his Rule of St. Benedict, which later became the archetype of the Western monastic order. Saint Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time, rebuilt the abbey and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary in 960 CE. In 1245, Henry III began a major reconstruction program and completed the central section of the building in 1272.
