History:

The intact tomb of the great 18th Dynasty Queen Nefertari is located on the West Bank of Luxor, Egypt, in the Valley of the Queens. Nefertari (c.1290-1225 BC) was the favorite wife of Ramesses the Great (1279-1213 BC) and the two had at least four daughters. There are few records of her life and her tomb is one of the best preserved of any woman of the New Kingdom period. The tomb was discovered in 1904 by Ernesto Schiaparelli and excavated three years later. It was found to be beautifully decorated with vivid painted reliefs depicting scenes from the Book of the Dead and pictures of Nefertari and Ramesses II in a variety of settings. The paintings are all in perfect condition and were likely done during the period of the building of the tomb. In 1988, the tomb was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and restoration work began. Over the following years, concrete was used to fill in cracks in the walls and new lighting was installed. The tomb has also been outfitted with a climate-controlled environment to help preserve its delicate interior. In 2014, the first full digital replica of the tomb was created using 1,337 laser scans of the walls. This replica has been made available online, for people the world over to be able to explore and appreciate Nefertari’s tomb without having to undertake the journey to Luxor.
