The temple is believed to have been built by the Pharaoh Amenophis III in the 18th Dynasty (1550–1292 BC) and expanded by Ptolemy VI (180–145 BC) in the Ptolemaic period, circa 140 BC. The temple has two sections: an enclosure called “The Mansion of Thoth”, and a temple proper. There is a small museum nearby that houses some of the artifacts found in and around the temple, including two steles that date back to the Ptolemaic period.
