The Step Pyramid of Sakkara is the oldest-known of Egypt’s 97 pyramids, located in the necropolis of Saqqara, near Cairo. This 6-layered step pyramid of King Djoser is believed to have been constructed in the 27th century BC and is thought to have been designed by Imhotep, an architect, high priest, and physician, now considered to be the father of Egyptian medicine. It was the first major stone structure built in Egypt, making it one of the world’s oldest monumental structures. The pyramid is composed of six successive tiers, each of these tiers being smaller than the last and dressed with fine white limestone cladding, producing a step pyramid appearance. It marks the beginning of the pyramid era, as it inspired later pharaohs to build more elaborate burial structures during their reign. The pyramid is also home to an underground complex of tunnels and chambers meant to replicate the underworld of the afterlife. The Sakkara Step Pyramid is the oldest surviving structure in Egypt, dating back to around 2600 BCE. It was the burial site of Pharaoh Djoser, of the third dynasty. This step pyramid, the earliest large-scale cut stone construction in Egypt, was designed by the chief minister Imhotep and is considered to be the first pyramid ever built. Over two million stones were used to build the pyramid. Its six steps reached a height of 63m and had a base length of 118m. The pyramid is made of large natural stone blocks with no internal chambers. Inside are enclosed two log-cabin mastaba tombs belonging to Pharaoh Djoser and his wife. The structure of the Sakkara Step Pyramid is unique compared to later pyramids – it was built with an inward inclination to each tier, rather than a smooth angled slope. There is also a complex network of subterranean corridors and chambers beneath the pyramid. This underground network contained a large central chamber, a gallery of eleven side chambers and numerous smaller shafts, believed to have been used for ancient rituals. The Sakkara Step Pyramid was the first of several pyramids built throughout Egypt during the Old Kingdom period.
